Amazon Launches Nova 2.5 Sonic for Smarter Real-Time Voice Agents

On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, Amazon Web Services announced the general availability of Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic, its newest speech-to-speech model for building real-time voice agents. The model is available through Amazon Bedrock, AWS's service for building with AI models, according to the AWS announcement.

What happened

Nova 2.5 Sonic is a speech-to-speech model. Instead of turning speech into text, sending that text to a separate AI model and then turning the answer back into speech, it handles the conversation as audio in a single model. That helps voice agents respond quickly and sound more natural.

AWS said the new version improves on Nova 2 Sonic, which launched in December 2025, in several ways. It reasons better, follows instructions more accurately and is more reliable when it calls tools, such as looking up an account or booking an appointment. AWS also said it has lower latency, so there are shorter pauses before the agent responds.

According to AWS, the model supports seven languages with expressive voices and has a context window of 256,000 tokens, which lets it keep track of long conversations. It also supports asynchronous tool calling, so the agent can keep talking with a caller while it waits for a task to finish in the background.

At launch, Nova 2.5 Sonic is available in four AWS regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Stockholm) and Asia Pacific (Tokyo). AWS said pricing is the same as Nova 2 Sonic. The company also said its Strands Bidi Agents tool, which helps developers build voice agents with less code, is now generally available.
