On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, Google released Nano Banana 2.1, the newest version of its popular AI image generation and editing model. The model is based on Gemini 3.6 Flash, and Google says it improves on the previous version "across the board" while cutting the price of image output by about 50%, according to The Decoder and Unite.AI.

What happened

Nano Banana is the name Google uses for its image models in the Gemini family. People use it to create images from text, edit photos with plain-language instructions and combine several pictures into one.

According to Unite.AI and Runtime Wire, Nano Banana 2.1 brings better visual quality, more accurate text inside images and stronger consistency when the same characters appear across several images. It can keep up to four characters consistent and can work from up to 14 reference images in a single request. It can also use Google Search to ground images in real-world information, and it creates images at 1K, 2K or 4K resolution.

Google's own test results, reported by Unite.AI, show a clear jump in quality. On an overall preference score, the new model scored 1,050 with its thinking mode turned on, compared with 990 for Nano Banana 2. Google also reported a large improvement in how accurate the facts are in generated infographics.

The price cut is a big part of the news. Unite.AI reported that image output in the Gemini API now costs $30 per million tokens, half the $60 charged for the previous model. That works out to about 3 cents for a standard 1K image.

Nano Banana 2.1 is available in the Gemini app, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, AI Mode in Google Search, Google Ads, Google Flow and Google Stitch. Runtime Wire reported that Google lists it as the recommended replacement for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, an older image model that could be shut down as early as Oct. 29.

Why it matters

AI image tools have moved from fun experiments to everyday business tools. Online stores use them for product photos. Marketers use them for ads and social posts. App makers use them to create graphics inside their products. For all of these uses, quality and cost both matter.

Better character consistency is especially useful. A brand mascot, a children's book character or a product model needs to look the same from one image to the next. Earlier AI tools often struggled with that. Improvements here make AI images far more practical for real projects.

The lower price matters even more for builders. When an app generates thousands of images a day, cutting the cost in half can turn a money-losing feature into a profitable one. Cheaper, better models make whole new kinds of products possible.

What this means for founders and builders

Every time a major AI capability gets better and cheaper, new product ideas become realistic. Think of tools that create custom product photos for small online stores, design kits for local businesses or illustrated learning materials for teachers and parents. Ideas that were too expensive to run a year ago may now make sense.

Still, access to a model is not the same as having a product. A business needs accounts, a smooth design, payment plans, storage for images and guardrails for safe use. That is the work that turns an API into something customers pay for.

The bottom line

Nano Banana 2.1 makes Google's image AI better and about half as expensive to use for image output. Stronger character consistency, sharper text and 4K output make it more useful for real business work. For founders, falling costs are opening the door to new AI-powered visual products that would not have been practical before.
