Reflection AI Unveils Beam, a 501B-Parameter Open-Weight Model
Nvidia-backed Reflection AI introduced Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model for coding and AI agents, with full weights due later in October.

On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, Reflection AI introduced Beam, a large open-weight AI model built for coding, reasoning and AI agent work. The Nvidia-backed startup says Beam has 501 billion total parameters and will be released under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows commercial use.
What happened
Beam is a "mixture-of-experts" model. That means it contains many smaller expert networks and only switches on a few of them for each request. According to Reflection's announcement, Beam uses about 23 billion active parameters at a time, out of 501 billion in total, and supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens. In simple terms, it is a very large model that tries to run with the cost of a much smaller one.
Reflection says Beam is designed for software engineering, running terminal commands, competitive programming and tool use. The company claims Beam is competitive with larger open models such as GLM-5.2 on reasoning benchmarks while using three to four times less inference compute, and that it approaches Qwen 3.8-Max on coding and agentic tasks. These are the company's own benchmark claims and have not yet been independently tested.
Beam is not fully public yet. An early-access waitlist is open now, and Reflection says it plans to release the weights, a technical report, a model card and developer tools later this month.
The model was trained on 23.8 trillion tokens of data, according to SiliconANGLE and MarkTechPost. Earlier this year, Reflection was reported to be raising money at a valuation of about $25 billion. The startup was founded by Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou.
Why it matters
"Open-weight" means anyone can download the model and run it on their own servers, instead of paying per request to a company's cloud service. Over the past two years, many of the strongest open-weight models have come from Chinese labs. SiliconANGLE described Beam as the first open model from a U.S. startup to show comparable or better performance than those leading Chinese models, according to the company's results.
That matters for businesses that want strong AI without sending sensitive data to an outside provider. Banks, health companies and government contractors often prefer models they can host and control themselves. A capable U.S.-built option with a permissive license gives them another choice.
It also adds price pressure. When good open models are available, closed AI providers have to compete harder on cost and features.
What this means for founders and builders
For founders, open-weight models like Beam lower the barrier to building AI products. You can fine-tune a model on your own data, run it on your own infrastructure and avoid being locked into one vendor's pricing. Keep in mind that a 501-billion-parameter model still needs serious hardware to run, so most small teams will use it through hosting partners rather than on a laptop.
But the model is only one piece of a product. Customers do not buy a model. They buy something that solves a problem: a clean interface, user accounts, payments, onboarding and support. That is where most of the build time goes.
If you want to skip that work, KIING DIGITAL LABS builds complete AI-powered products. You can browse finished products ready to acquire, such as our AI scripture companion Bible Buddyy, or start a custom build designed around the model and features you need.
A practical tip: design your product so the AI model can be swapped. New models are arriving every few weeks. Building with a clean layer between your app and the model lets you move to a cheaper or better option, like Beam, without rewriting everything.
The bottom line
Reflection AI's Beam is a major new open-weight option from a U.S. startup, aimed squarely at coding and AI agents, with full weights promised later this month. For builders, more strong open models mean lower costs and more control. The real advantage still comes from turning those models into products people want to use and pay for.
