Mistral Previews Large 4, a 1-Trillion-Parameter AI Model

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, French AI company Mistral released a preview of Mistral Large 4, its biggest model yet, with 1 trillion parameters. The company said the model is available now in preview through its Mistral Studio platform and that it plans to release the model's weights openly by the end of October, according to VentureBeat and AI News.

What happened

Mistral Large 4 uses a design called mixture of experts. The model has 1 trillion parameters in total, but only about 49 billion are active for any single request. This lets a very large model run faster and cheaper than its size suggests. Mistral says the model is natively multimodal, which means it was built to understand images as well as text.

The company said it trained the model from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European data centers. Its training data covered more than 160 languages, including every official language of the European Union. Inside the company, the model has a playful nickname: "le Chonk."

Mistral published a range of benchmark scores focused on coding, agents and cybersecurity. Among them, it reported 61.7% on the DeepSWE v1.1 coding test and 93% on Cybench, a set of security challenges. Independent testing firm Artificial Analysis called Mistral Large 4 the most intelligent model from outside the United States and China.

Mistral also said it plans to support private cloud and on-premise deployments, so companies can run the model on their own systems.

Why it matters

Most of the world's most powerful AI models come from a small group of American and Chinese companies. Mistral is Europe's best-known AI lab, and Large 4 is its strongest attempt yet to compete at the top level.

The open-weight plan is the bigger story. When a model's weights are released, companies can download it, run it on their own servers and customize it. That matters for businesses in fields such as finance, law and healthcare that cannot send sensitive data to an outside provider. It also matters for governments and companies in Europe that want AI built and controlled under European law.

Mistral Large 4 also joins a busy month for large open models. On Oct. 5, Reflection AI unveiled Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open-weight model. More strong open models mean more choice and lower prices for the businesses that build on them.

A word of caution: these are early, preview results, and most of the scores come from Mistral itself. Independent tests over the coming weeks will show how the model performs in real use.
