OpenAI Will Test Visual Ads Inside ChatGPT Image Generation
OpenAI says it will begin testing clearly labeled visual ads during ChatGPT image generation in the U.S. later this month, expanding its ad business.

On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, OpenAI said it will begin testing a new visual ad format in ChatGPT later this month. The ads will appear while users generate images, starting in the United States with an initial group of advertisers, according to reports from BleepingComputer and TechCrunch.
What happened
ChatGPT already shows ads in some conversations. The new test adds a visual format. When a user asks ChatGPT to create an image, a clearly labeled ad may appear alongside the generated image, kept separate from the image itself. According to BleepingComputer, the ads are meant to show "product inspiration, how a product is used, or experiences associated with a service."
OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. The company also says it has safeguards meant to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable conversations. TechCrunch reported that the ads will be aimed at people on the free and lower-cost plans, and that the test starts in the U.S. with plans to expand later.
Alongside the new format, OpenAI is adding more measurement partners so advertisers can track results. BleepingComputer listed Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversion tracking; AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava for attribution; and DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science in early brand-suitability pilots. OpenAI says these partners will not have access to private user conversations.
The audience is large. ChatGPT reaches about 1.2 billion weekly users, according to both outlets.
Why it matters
Running AI models is expensive, and every major AI company is looking for ways to pay for free users. Subscriptions cover part of the cost. Ads are the other classic answer, the same model that built Google and Meta.
Image generation is a natural place to test visual ads. Someone asking for a picture of a cozy reading nook or a backyard patio is often thinking about products. That moment of inspiration is valuable to brands, and OpenAI is trying to turn it into a new revenue stream without mixing ads into the answers themselves.
TechCrunch also noted a side effect: ads could push more casual users to pay for a subscription to avoid them. That is the same "free with ads, or pay to remove them" trade-off used by streaming and music apps.
What this means for founders and builders
There are three lessons here for anyone building a digital product.
1. Plan your revenue model early. Even the most-used AI product in the world is adding new ways to earn money. If your product has free users, decide early how they will help pay for the business, whether that is ads, upgrades, referrals or paid add-ons.
2. Keep ads out of the core experience. OpenAI is careful to say ads stay separate from the answers and the generated image. Trust is the product. If users feel the core result is for sale, they leave. A single, well-placed ad slot often earns more over time than a page covered in banners.
3. Measurement is a feature. Advertisers spend where they can prove results. OpenAI is lining up a long list of tracking and brand-safety partners for that reason. If you sell anything to businesses, give them clear numbers that show what they got for their money.
If you would rather start with a product that already has its business model built in, our Acquisitions page lists complete software products ready to take over. Each one is built with monetization in mind from day one. And if you have your own idea, a custom build can include subscriptions, upgrades and ad space designed the right way.
The bottom line
OpenAI's visual ad test shows where consumer AI is heading: free tiers paid for by carefully placed, clearly labeled ads, with a paid tier for people who want none. For builders, the lesson is to design your money model from the start and protect the core experience while you do it.
