On Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, startup Causa Prima announced it has raised $20 million to build a network where companies' AI agents talk to each other to settle billing disputes and speed up payments between businesses. Fortune reported that the seed round was led by Base10 Partners, with QED Investors and FJ Labs joining and existing investors Creandum, Kfund and Borusan Ventures also participating.

What happened

Causa Prima is a Delaware-based company founded in early 2026. Fortune reported that the round closed in September and follows a $10 million pre-seed round, bringing its total funding to $30 million. The company did not disclose its valuation. Causa Prima also confirmed the $20 million raise on its own website.

The company's product is what it calls an agent-to-agent network for business finance. In a typical business-to-business deal, a buyer and a supplier go back and forth over invoices, mismatched amounts, approvals and payment timing. Causa Prima gives each side an AI agent that handles that back-and-forth. According to the company's website, its agents can match invoices, clear disputes, handle approvals and negotiate payment terms directly with the other company. It lists more than 150 integrations, including SAP, NetSuite and Stripe.

Fortune reported that the company makes money by taking a cut when its agents successfully negotiate early payments between buyers and suppliers.

The founding team has deep experience in this area:

  • Maex Ament previously founded Taulia in 2009 and Centrifuge in 2017 and earlier worked as a software engineer at SAP.
  • Henrik Gebbing is a former McKinsey senior associate who co-founded Finoa.
  • Philip Stanislaus, the chief technology officer, previously led engineering under Ament at Centrifuge.

The company has 25 employees across offices in Madrid and Munich and plans to use the new funding to open a New York office as it expands into the United States.

Why it matters

Payments between businesses are enormous. Fortune, citing Fortune Business Insights, put B2B payments at roughly $98 trillion a year. Yet much of the work behind them is still manual. Fortune also cited a 2025 Ardent Partners report that found nearly half of accounts payable executives say slow invoice approvals are their biggest challenge, with processing taking more than eight days on average.

Most finance software today works inside a single company. Causa Prima is aiming at the space between companies, where a buyer's team and a supplier's team trade emails to sort out problems. Base10 general partner Rexhi Dollaku described the company to Fortune as building for that handoff between companies rather than inside one company. If AI agents can resolve those disputes quickly, suppliers get paid faster and buyers can earn discounts for paying early.

Ament summed up the problem simply, telling Fortune that much of today's process is still "somewhat manual." For small suppliers in particular, slow payments can squeeze cash flow and make it harder to grow. Software that shortens the wait, without adding work for either side, could matter well beyond large enterprises.

What this means for founders and builders

AI agents are moving from simple chat into real business transactions. The next step, agents negotiating with other agents, opens up new kinds of products and new ways to charge for them.

Causa Prima's business model is a good example. Instead of a flat subscription, it earns a share when its agents deliver a result. Outcome-based pricing like this can be easier to sell, because customers pay only when they see value.

For builders, the lesson is to look at the moments where two businesses have to coordinate. Invoices, orders, contracts and scheduling all involve back-and-forth that software could handle.

The bottom line

Causa Prima has raised $20 million to let AI agents settle billing disputes and payment terms between companies, and it earns money when those agents succeed. It is an early sign that agent-to-agent commerce is becoming a real business category, not just an idea.
