On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, German software giant SAP announced an agreement to acquire TechWolf, a startup based in Ghent, Belgium, that uses AI to give companies a live view of the skills and work inside their organizations. Financial terms were not disclosed. SAP said the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions.
What happened
TechWolf began as a project at Ghent University and grew into what it calls an AI work intelligence platform. Its software looks at the tasks inside each job, the skills employees actually have and data from the outside labor market. It then helps companies decide who to hire, who to retrain and where to move people as their needs change.
According to SAP's announcement, TechWolf's customers include HSBC, Atlas Copco, GSK, Ericsson, AMD, MetLife, PayPal and Booking.com. SAP also said TechWolf's open-source models have been downloaded more than 2 million times.
SAP plans to make TechWolf's technology a core part of SAP SuccessFactors, its human resources software, and of Joule, its AI assistant. The Next Web reported that the platform will remain open to companies that do not use SAP.
"This grounding layer perfectly matches our strategy," said Manoj Swaminathan, president and chief product officer of SAP Autonomous Suite, in the press release. He said it "makes token usage more efficient" and "lowers the cost of deploying workforce agents."
TechWolf CEO and co-founder Andreas De Neve said, "We have spent eight years building the evidence layer to answer those questions." In a letter posted on TechWolf's website, he said the company grew its U.S. annual recurring revenue from $1 million to $15 million over 18 months, and called the deal Belgium's largest venture-backed software acquisition.
Why it matters
Every large company is trying to figure out how AI will change the work its people do. To answer that, they need accurate data about which tasks exist, who can do them and which skills are missing. Most companies do not have that data in one clean place. TechWolf built a business around filling that gap.
For SAP, the purchase fits a clear pattern. The Next Web noted that SAP has been on an AI buying spree in 2026, including deals for Reltio, Dremio and Prior Labs. Large software companies are buying startups that give their AI features better data and context, rather than waiting years to build the same thing in-house.
There is also a lesson in the quote about "token usage." AI agents cost money every time they think. Software that gives an agent the right facts up front helps it do the job faster and cheaper. That is a big part of why SAP sees value here.
What this means for founders and builders
TechWolf's story is a strong example of how a focused software product becomes an acquisition target. It solved one hard problem well, built a list of well-known customers and made its technology easy to plug into the systems those customers already used. That made it a natural fit for a bigger platform.
Founders can learn from that path. A product does not need to be huge to be valuable. It needs to solve a real problem for a clear group of buyers and fit neatly into the tools they rely on every day.

The bottom line
SAP's deal for TechWolf shows that big software companies are paying for startups that give their AI better data about the real world. TechWolf won by focusing on one valuable problem, understanding skills and work, and doing it well enough to attract major customers. For builders and buyers, focused products with real customers remain some of the most valuable assets in software.
