Meta and Sierra Propose an Open Standard for Personal AI Agents
Sierra and Meta unveiled the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how AI agents sign in to businesses, backed by Shopify, Stripe and Walmart.

On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, AI customer service company Sierra and Meta announced the Personal Agent Protocol, a proposed open standard for how personal AI agents identify themselves to businesses and what they are allowed to do. Shopify, Stripe, Walmart, Genesys, Instinct and Rocket are taking part, according to CNBC and The Next Web.
What happened
Personal AI agents are assistants that act on a person's behalf. They can look up an order, change a booking or shop for a product. Right now, there is no common way for a business to know which agent is visiting, who it represents or what it should be allowed to do.
The Personal Agent Protocol, or PAP, is meant to fix that. According to The Next Web, it builds on OAuth, the same sign-in technology behind "Log in with Google" buttons. An agent can arrive as a guest with read-only access. Once the customer signs in and approves it, the agent can get more permissions, such as making changes to an account.
Businesses keep control over how agents reach them. They can send agents to their website, to their APIs using standards such as MCP and OpenAPI, or to their own customer service agents. The Next Web reported that version 0.1 of the specification is due later in October, and that payments are planned as a future extension rather than part of the first version.
"It is kind of chaos until such a standard exists," Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor said, according to Forkast and Implicator. Taylor, who is also chairman of OpenAI's board, said he hoped other major AI companies would adopt the standard.
Forkast noted that Amazon, OpenAI and Anthropic are not part of the founding group.
Why it matters
The internet runs on shared standards. Email works because every provider follows the same rules. Online payments work because banks and card networks agree on how to talk to each other. AI agents need the same kind of agreement before they can safely handle real tasks for millions of people.
Without a standard, every business has to guess whether an agent is trustworthy. Some will block agents completely. Others will let them in with no limits. Neither choice is good for customers or companies. A shared protocol gives both sides a clear, safe way to work together.
The list of backers matters too. Shopify powers millions of online stores, Stripe handles payments for a huge number of internet businesses and Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the world. If those companies adopt PAP, it could quickly become a normal part of how online stores operate.
Still, adoption is not guaranteed. Several of the biggest AI companies are not in the group yet, and the specification is not even published. Competing standards could appear, as they often do in fast-moving markets.
What this means for founders and builders
For anyone running an online business, the message is clear: AI agents are coming to your front door. In the near future, some of your "visitors" will be software acting for a customer, not the customer themselves. Businesses whose products can be read and used by agents may win more of those sales.
That makes clean, modern software more valuable than ever. Platforms with clear account systems, good APIs and well-organized product data are much easier to connect to agents than old, patched-together sites.

The bottom line
The Personal Agent Protocol is an early but important step toward a world where AI agents can safely do business on our behalf. With Meta, Sierra, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart involved, it has strong backing, though the details are still being written. For founders, now is the time to make sure your product is ready for customers who arrive through an AI agent.
