On Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, DoorDash used its Dash Forward 2026 event to announce a batch of new features, from ordering dinner by text message to drone deliveries. One of the most interesting updates for software builders is a new connector that lets companies plug DoorDash directly into their own AI agents.
What happened
According to DoorDash and Chain Store Age, the company announced six main updates:
- Text ordering: U.S. iPhone users can join a waitlist for an AI assistant that works inside text messages. It searches local restaurants, suggests items, builds a cart and completes checkout in the same thread, and it remembers preferences for next time.
- DoorDash Air: A drone delivery system DoorDash built itself. It is being piloted in Northern California with Chipotle, Popeyes and local restaurants. DoorDash says about 80% of typical restaurant orders can be carried by its aircraft and that early tests averaged under five minutes from restaurant to customer.
- Dasher Returns: For a flat $7.99 fee, a Dasher picks up an eligible return from your door, with no box or label needed. It is live in select cities, with a nationwide rollout expected in November.
- DashOS: A platform for restaurants that connects marketplace orders, direct ordering, reservations, loyalty and marketing in one place.
- DashBuddy: An AI assistant for delivery drivers. DoorDash says more than 200,000 Dashers already use it and that it resolves about 95% of questions from new Dashers.
- DoorDash Ordering Connector: A tool that lets companies connect DoorDash to their internal AI tools and agents.
The connector is built on the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, an open standard for linking AI apps to outside services. According to DoorDash, agents using it can find items, build carts, place orders and track deliveries. Companies can use it for office lunches, group orders, meal benefits and restocking supplies. Early beta partners include SpaceX AI, Vercel, Cognition, Tempo and Mercor. The connector is in limited beta, and a waitlist for more companies opened on Sept. 30.
Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, explained the drone approach this way: "We didn't start with a drone and ask what would fit. We started with what people order and how local businesses actually operate, then built the entire system from there."
Why it matters
DoorDash is one of the largest local commerce marketplaces in the U.S., and this event shows how it plans to stay at the center of buying as habits change.
The big shift is that customers may not open the DoorDash app at all. They might send a text, or an AI agent at work might place the order for them. By building an MCP connector, DoorDash is making sure that when software agents go shopping, they can shop on DoorDash.
That is a pattern worth watching across all marketplaces. The winners will be the platforms that are easy for both people and AI agents to use.
What this means for founders and builders
Marketplaces are becoming "agent-ready." If you run or plan to run a marketplace, think about how an AI agent would search, compare and buy on your platform. Clean product data and simple ordering flows are no longer just nice for humans; they also make your marketplace usable by agents.
Conversation is the new storefront. Ordering by text message removes almost every step between wanting something and buying it. Smaller marketplaces can borrow this idea, whether for booking services, ordering supplies or renting equipment.
Local services are still wide open. DoorDash is extending into returns, drones and restaurant tools. That shows how much value sits in local commerce. Niche marketplaces that connect local buyers and sellers in a specific category can still win their corner.
Building a marketplace from scratch means handling listings, payments, search, accounts and trust between buyers and sellers. That is a lot of work. The bottom line
DoorDash's Dash Forward 2026 announcements cover a lot of ground: text ordering, drone deliveries, at-home returns, restaurant software and an AI assistant for drivers. For builders, the standout is the Ordering Connector, which lets AI agents place real orders. It is a clear sign that marketplaces need to serve software agents as well as people.
