On Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, Uber announced a deal to buy ezCater, the online marketplace that companies use to order catered meals for their offices, for $2.3 billion in cash. The news was reported by Bloomberg, TechCrunch and The Boston Globe, and the deal is expected to close in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval.

What happened

ezCater was founded in 2007 and is based in Boston. It runs a two-sided marketplace. On one side are businesses that need food for meetings, training days and office events. On the other side are restaurants that want those large, profitable orders.

According to Nation's Restaurant News, ezCater works with more than 140,000 restaurants and handled more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings over the past 12 months. The average order is more than $400, far larger than a typical food delivery order. The Boston Globe reported that ezCater's most recent private valuation was $1.6 billion, which means Uber is paying well above that figure.

TechCrunch noted an unusual detail in ezCater's history: the company was bootstrapped for seven years before it raised its first outside funding, a $4 million round in 2014.

Uber said the deal will expand Uber Eats and its Uber for Business unit, which sells rides and meals to companies. "Catering is a big business, and can be a huge revenue stream for restaurants," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in the announcement. ezCater is led by CEO Nihad Rahman.

Why it matters

Food delivery is a crowded and low-margin business. Catering is different. Orders are bigger, they are planned ahead and they are usually paid for by a company, not by one person watching every dollar. That makes catering one of the more attractive corners of the food marketplace world.

Uber already has two things ezCater can use: millions of consumers and a large base of business customers through Uber for Business. ezCater brings a strong network of restaurants that know how to fill large orders and a trusted brand among office managers. Putting those pieces together is a classic marketplace move. Each side of the network becomes more valuable as the other side grows.

The deal also shows that big platforms would rather buy a proven niche marketplace than build one from scratch. ezCater spent nearly two decades building trust with restaurants and corporate buyers. That kind of network is very hard to copy quickly, even for a company the size of Uber.

What this means for founders and builders

The lesson for founders is simple: niche marketplaces can become very valuable. ezCater did not try to be everything. It focused on one specific job, feeding offices, and became the go-to platform for it. That focus is what made it worth $2.3 billion to a buyer.

Many of today's best marketplace ideas follow the same pattern. They connect two groups in a single industry who struggle to find each other. Think of artists and songwriters, tutors and students, or local service providers and businesses. The hard part is not the idea. It is building a working platform with listings, matching, payments and trust features, then getting both sides to show up.

That is exactly where KIING DIGITAL LABS helps. HostGhost, one of the platforms on our Acquisitions page, is a fully built two-sided marketplace that connects music artists with ghostwriters. You can see HostGhost here. If you have your own marketplace idea, a custom build gets you a complete platform without spending years on development. For a closer look at how two-sided platforms work, read our post on the HostGhost marketplace.

Buyers should also notice how this deal was valued. Uber is paying for gross bookings, growth and a loyal network on both sides. When you build or buy a marketplace, those are the numbers that matter most over time.

The bottom line

Uber's $2.3 billion purchase of ezCater shows how much value a focused, two-sided marketplace can create. ezCater won by owning one valuable niche, and that made it a prize for one of the largest platforms in the world. For founders, the path is clear: pick a specific market, build a platform that serves both sides well and grow the network.
